Wasteless Horsemen Zero Waste School Year 2 Project Recap

TUFSD's Wasteless Horsemen initiative gained momentum in its second year as more and more of the students and staff across our campuses are practicing zero waste habits at school. In the 2024-25 school year, the Washington Irving and Middle School communities learned how to "recycle right" and compost--next up is the High School! Together, our elementary students are diverting about 67,000 lbs of cafeteria materials from the trash each school year, and students are taking their sustainable habits on the road, from teaching residents of Kendal On Hudson to composting food scraps when they visit the Peabody Preserve. For this progress in minimizing its environmental impact, TUFSD was awarded the New York State School Board Association “Champions of Change” Award as well as the Westchester County Eco Award this spring.
